(England captain)England have crashed out of the Champions Trophy after losing to Afghanistan. Many have criticized Jos Buttler’s leadership after the loss to the comparatively weak Afghans. Buttler announced his resignation as captain yesterday in the face of criticism.

England will take on New Zealand in their group stage match today. Buttler will end his captaincy for England with this match. In this context, coach Brendon McCullum said, “Joss (Buttler) will lead this match as well. This will be his last match as captain. Hopefully, the boys will show themselves well and bid his captaincy farewell in a great way.”

Regarding Buttler’s replacement, McCullum said, “Whatever it is, we have to find a way to implement it. It is still very raw, it has not been 24 hours (of Buttler’s decision). After Saturday’s match, we will have a lot of time to think about who can be the right captain for us and what kind of support and structure we need to give him to bring out the best in the team.”

Harry Brook could be seen as the next captain after Buttler. But it is not yet certain. Phil Salt and Liam Livingstone are also on the list. McCullum said, “We have some good options. We have some great leaders already.”

“Jos (Buttler)’s leadership imprint is here too. He worked to develop leaders within the team. It’s not that he’s a hothead, there are a lot of young cricketers in the team who have a great sense of cricket and he (Buttler) has inspired them to develop and learn as leaders. Whoever we choose, we have to make sure that we can be right next to him and improve his performance,” he added.
