The Blaze secured their spot in the semi-finals of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup after a thrilling four-wicket win over Durham Women at Trent Bridge. The chase of 253 was anchored by half-centuries from Ireland’s Orla Prendergast (67 off 79) and Scotland captain Kathryn Bryce (66 off 72), who shared a pivotal 107-run partnership for the third wicket. Experienced England allrounder Georgia Elwiss sealed the victory with a composed unbeaten 46 from 45 balls.
Durham Set a Competitive Target
Durham Women posted 252 for 9 in their 50 overs after electing to bat first. Mady Villiers starred with a career-best 79 off 88 balls, striking 12 boundaries, while Emily Windsor contributed 54 from 75. Despite losing key batter Hollie Armitage early, Durham maintained momentum through the middle order.
Blaze spinner Kirstie Gordon and Elwiss took two wickets apiece, while Durham’s Katie Levick and Villiers matched that with two wickets each. Elwiss commented after the win,
“It was crucial to support Prendergast and Bryce through the middle overs and keep our composure. Everyone contributed when it mattered.”
Blaze Chase Dominated by Prendergast and Bryce
The Blaze started their innings strongly, matching Durham’s first 10-over score with one wicket less at 47 for one. Prendergast and Bryce built a dominant partnership, reaching 130 for two by the halfway mark. Bryce achieved her sixth half-century of the tournament, while Prendergast continued to attack with powerful strokes over midwicket and legside boundaries.
As Durham tried to claw back into the match, The Blaze remained focused. Elwiss anchored the chase in the final overs, ensuring there was no late wobble. She praised her teammates, saying:
“Orla and Kathryn set the platform beautifully, and it was a team effort to finish off the game. This win gives us a lot of confidence heading into the semi-finals.”
With this win, The Blaze now need to defeat Essex in their final group game to secure a home semi-final next Wednesday, while Durham will need other results to go their way to finish in the top four.
