Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill endured a challenging series with the bat against Australia, registering scores of 10, 9, and 24 across the three ODIs. These performances saw his average drop to a mere 14.33. Notably, Gill’s average as an ODI captain against Australia is now lower than legendary skippers Sourav Ganguly (18.60 in 2001) and MS Dhoni (17.20 in 2016), marking the lowest ever for an Indian captain in a series against the Aussies.

Reflecting on his performance, Shubman remained composed. “Lean patches are part of the game for any batter. I’m not worried about the numbers; my focus is on contributing when it matters,” he said after the final ODI.

Gill Red-Ball Form Provides Silver Lining

While Gill struggled in limited-overs cricket, his red-ball form has been exceptional. He topped the charts during India’s five-Test tour of England with 754 runs in 10 innings and followed it up with a fifty and an unbeaten 129* against the West Indies at home.

However, his recent performances in white-ball tournaments haven’t mirrored that consistency. During the Asia Cup 2025, where he was appointed vice-captain under Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman managed just 127 runs in seven matches, while his opening partner, Abhishek Sharma, starred.

Looking ahead, Shubman will continue as the deputy skipper to Suryakumar in India’s five-match T20I series against Australia, starting October 29 in Canberra. India’s schedule remains packed with the upcoming white-ball series against Australia, followed by a full home series against South Africa and an eight-match series versus New Zealand.
