Rashid Khan

Afghanistan’s T20 captain Rashid Khan has been struggling for consistent form since the last edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). For the first time in his T20 career, he bowled at an economy rate exceeding 9 for the Gujarat Titans. His performances in domestic T20 competitions have also been below his usual standards.

Currently featuring in England’s franchise league, The Hundred for the Oval Invincibles, Rashid set an unwanted record — conceding the most runs in a single match in the tournament’s history.

Despite securing Player of the Match awards in his previous two outings by taking three wickets in each game, Rashid endured a nightmare performance on Tuesday. He gave away 59 runs in just 20 balls without taking a wicket — the highest runs conceded in both his T20 and The Hundred career.

Rashid Surpasses Previous Unwanted Records

Before this, Rashid’s most expensive T20 spell came in the 2018 IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad, when he conceded 55 runs in four overs. He had also given away 54 runs twice (2023 and 2025), 51 runs in 2024, and 50 runs in three overs in the most recent IPL season.

In The Hundred, the previous worst figures belonged to David Wiese, who conceded 53 runs but managed to claim one wicket. Others on the list include David Payne (53/1), Steven Finn (51/1), and Chris Wood (49/0). Rashid has now gone past them all with his 59-run spell.

Oval Invincibles Fall Short Against Birmingham Phoenix

Rashid’s poor day coincided with a loss for the Oval Invincibles. Batting first, they posted 180/8 in 100 balls, thanks to Donovan Pereira’s 63 off 29 balls and Jordan Cox’s 44 off 30. Birmingham’s Trent Boult, Adam Milne, and Benny Howell each took two wickets.

However, the total wasn’t enough, as Birmingham’s Liam Livingstone (69 off 27) and Will Smith (51 off 29) powered their side to victory with two balls to spare, winning by four wickets. England pacer Shakib Mahmud took three wickets for the Invincibles, but it wasn’t enough to turn the game around.
