Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has revealed that the club’s long-term plans for the Newcastle United Stadium and training facilities are currently “in limbo.” Howe also admitted there is a “99.9% chance” he will not be in charge to see these plans realised.

Stadium Expansion or New Build Still Under Consideration

Newcastle United continue to explore options for expanding Newcastle United Stadium or building a completely new stadium elsewhere in the city. However, chief executive David Hopkinson has indicated that the club will likely continue playing at St James’ Park in its current form for “many years” to come.

Howe said clarity over the stadium’s future is essential for the club’s long-term growth.

“Looking at the club from a broader perspective, the stadium and training ground are in limbo at the moment,” Howe explained. “Understanding which direction the club is going to take would really help move everything forward in a positive way.”

While the Newcastle United Stadium situation is uncertain, the club is moving ahead with significant work at its training ground in Benton. Plans are in place to nearly double the site’s footprint.

Despite recent upgrades—including hydrotherapy facilities, larger dressing rooms, and improved player lounges—Howe noted that the current training ground cannot match the country’s top facilities. Eventually, a new state-of-the-art training base will be needed.

Financial and Capacity Gap

St James’ Park was once the second-largest club stadium in England, behind only Old Trafford. Today, however, several Premier League clubs—including Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, West Ham United, and Everton—have overtaken Newcastle in terms of stadium capacity.

This has widened a revenue gap between Newcastle and England’s top clubs. In the 2023–24 season, Manchester United generated £87m more in match-day income and £219.3m more in commercial revenue than Newcastle. Howe emphasised that improved Newcastle United Stadium facilities would help the club compete more effectively.

Ambition and Patience Key to Long-Term Success

Howe stressed that ambition remains high within Newcastle United, but he urged patience in making infrastructure decisions.

“If taking extra time ensures the Newcastle United Stadium and training ground projects are done correctly for the next several decades, it’s worth it,” he said. “I’d rather see it done properly than rushed.”

He also acknowledged that he is unlikely to still be in charge when these projects are completed.

“There’s a 99.9% chance I won’t see either project finished,” Howe added. “But I care deeply about making sure Newcastle has the right foundations in place for future generations of players and supporters.”
