Liverpool eased some of the pressure surrounding their inconsistent domestic form by producing a commanding performance in the UEFA Champions League. Arne Slot’s men recorded a convincing 3-0 victory away at Olympique Marseille, securing a place in the competition’s top eight. On the same night, Bayern Munich continued their strong European run with a comfortable 2-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise.

Reds Shine in Marseille

Playing in a hostile atmosphere in southern France, Liverpool were clinical despite seeing less of the ball. The visitors registered 12 attempts, four of them on target, while Marseille failed to convert any of their 15 shots into goals.

Dominik Szoboszlai broke the deadlock with a precise low free-kick just before halftime, setting the tone for the second half. Liverpool doubled their lead in the 72nd minute when a deflected cross from Jeremie Frimpong forced Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli into an own goal. Cody Gakpo sealed the result in stoppage time with a calm finish.

“𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒐𝒚𝒔 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒅 𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒂𝒎𝒆,” 𝑺𝒍𝒐𝒕 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅. “𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒃𝒊𝒈 𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒑 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒖𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑬𝒖𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆.”

Mohamed Salah, returning from African Cup of Nations duty, came close to scoring late on but saw his effort drift wide. The victory lifted Liverpool to fourth place in the standings with 15 points from seven matches, marking back-to-back Champions League wins.

Bayern Maintain Second Spot

At the Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich dominated possession and tempo against Union Saint-Gilloise. Despite being reduced to 10 men for the final half-hour, Vincent Kompany’s side remained in control.

Harry Kane proved decisive once again, heading in from a corner in the 52nd minute before calmly converting a penalty moments later to take his Champions League tally to seven goals.

“𝑾𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒚𝒆𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍, 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒂 𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝒅𝒐𝒘𝒏,” 𝑲𝒂𝒏𝒆 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅. “𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒕’𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒎𝒔 𝒅𝒐.”

Bayern’s victory moved them back into second place on 18 points, three behind leaders Arsenal, with Real Madrid and Liverpool rounding out the top four.
