The 2023 ODI World Cup final at home broke the hearts of Indian fans. They will make up for that loss six months later, in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Later, India recently won the ICC Champions Trophy, another mega competition in the ODI format. But on the night of that final, a tragic tragedy befell a family in Uttar Pradesh. A class 8 student died that day. Later, it was reported in the local media that she had a heart attack after being unable to bear Virat Kohli’s dismissal.
India and New Zealand faced off in the Champions Trophy final in Dubai on March 9. The Kiwis, who had come out to bat first, barely managed to score 250 after a batting disaster. But that capital was not enough. Although India won, Kohli, who was in form, did not bat in the title-deciding match. The experienced star was out for just 1 run. Rumors have spread that a 14-year-old girl named Priyanshi died suddenly after seeing her out. However, her family has refuted that claim.
Priyanshi’s father Ajay Pandey told Indian media outlet News18 that he was out of the house at the time (of his daughter’s heart attack). He went to the market after watching New Zealand’s first innings. After that, he received a call from home that Priyanshi had suddenly fallen ill. When he was rushed to the hospital, the doctor on duty declared his daughter dead. Kohli’s outing has nothing to do with this incident.
The first rumours about Priyanshi’s death spread very quickly. Even some local media outlets quoted her neighbours as saying that the teenager was mentally traumatised after seeing Kohli’s dismissal. However, her family has strongly denied this. They claim that when the tragedy happened, India was playing well and Kohli had not yet come to the crease to bat.
Incidentally, India started off well in chasing the Kiwis. The two openers put on 105 runs in 18.4 overs. Then Shubman Gill was dismissed for 31 runs. Kohli was also dismissed lbw by Michael Bracewell with just 1 run remaining. After that, India played according to the situation, while New Zealand tested their strong batting lineup with tight bowling. However, with Rohit Sharma’s 76, Shreyas Iyer’s 48 and several cameos, India reached the port of victory with 4 wickets in hand.
