Freedom advances as rain cancels MLC Qualifier 1 match

The much-anticipated Qualifier 1 clash between Texas Super Kings and Washington Freedom in the MLC 2025 was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to relentless rain and adverse weather conditions. Only the toss was completed before the match was called off, and with no reserve day scheduled, Washington Freedom advanced directly to the final as the top-ranked team from the league stage. This marks Freedom’s second consecutive final appearance in the competition.

Rain Causes Abandonment Before Play Could Begin

The game was officially abandoned at 9:45 pm local time in Dallas, nearly three hours after the scheduled 7 pm start. Play was unable to commence because of a lightning advisory and persistent heavy rain that soaked the pitch and outfield. The conditions deteriorated despite a brief window following the storm, ultimately leading to the match being called off 41 minutes before the cut-off time required to start a reduced five-overs-a-side game.

Despite the washout, the toss was held promptly at 6:30 pm, with Washington Freedom winning and opting to bowl first. They made a strategic change to their lineup by bringing in pace bowler Lockie Ferguson in place of Mark Chapman. Meanwhile, Texas Super Kings decided to stick with their unchanged squad for the encounter.

Freedom Looks Ahead to Their Second Final in Two Years

With the Qualifier 1 abandoned, Texas Super Kings will now face the winner of the Eliminator match between MI New York and San Francisco Unicorns scheduled for Tuesday. The victor of that game will play Washington Freedom in Qualifier 2, setting up the final path to the championship clash.

Freedom captain expressed relief at progressing despite the frustrating circumstances:
