Delhi Capitals Plan Jamaica Tallawahs CPL Relaunch

The GMR Group, co-owners of the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), are reportedly in advanced discussions to revive the Jamaica Tallawahs franchise in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

GMR Expands Its Global Cricket Footprint

Over the past few years, GMR has significantly expanded its cricket portfolio. Apart from its IPL association, the Indian infrastructure giant also manages:

  • Dubai Capitals in the ILT20
  • Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket (MLC)
  • Hampshire in English county cricket
  • Southern Brave in The Hundred

The group also owns teams in kabaddi and kho kho, further strengthening its presence across multiple sports.

Jamaica Tallawahs Return on the Horizon

The Jamaica Tallawahs, one of the CPL’s original six teams and three-time champions, have been absent for the last two seasons. The franchise’s previous owner, Kris Persaud, sold it back to the league in 2023 and later purchased rights to form the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons.

Persaud had earlier cited “a lack of government support” as the primary reason behind the franchise’s disbanding. However, ahead of Jamaica’s recent elections, the sports and tourism ministry confirmed that it was “finalising arrangements” for a CPL team’s return, supported by new investments at Sabina Park.

CPL Optimistic About Jamaica’s Comeback

GMR representatives were present at the CPL final on Sunday, with insiders suggesting they are strong contenders to run the revived franchise from next year. If successful, the league would feature seven teams, adding more fixtures to the tournament.

Pete Russell expressed optimism earlier this month:

“𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝑷𝑳 𝒊𝒔 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒆𝒙𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒂 𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒊𝒄𝒂 𝒂𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒇𝒓𝒖𝒊𝒕𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒖𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕.”
