Mohammad Mithun has been elected as the new president of the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), following Thursday’s voting in Dhaka. Mithun secured 154 votes, comfortably defeating interim convenor Salim Shahed, who received 34 votes, according to election commissioner Iftekhar Rahman.

Mithun’s Vision for CWAB

Speaking after his victory, Mithun emphasized a collaborative approach with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

CWAB, established in 2004, had never held proper elections in its 21-year history. Former Bangladesh captain and Awami League MP Naimur Rahman led the association for 11 years, alongside general secretary Debabrata Paul. Both resigned earlier this year, paving the way for Shahed to become the interim head.

Strong Representation from Top Cricketers

This year’s elections saw increased involvement from Bangladesh’s leading cricketers. Shahriar Hossain was elected senior vice-president, and Nurul Hasan will serve as vice president. New executive committee members include Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shamsur Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Rumana Ahmed, Khaled Mashud Pilot, Imrul Kayes, Irfan Sukkur, and Akbar Ali.

CWAB is affiliated with the World Cricketers’ Association (formerly FICA) and gained prominence during the 2019 strike by Bangladesh’s top cricketers, who had called for a complete overhaul of the body. Despite promises by former CWAB leaders Naimur Rahman and Debabrata Paul to hold elections, none were conducted for the next five years.
