The upcoming Catalan derby between La Liga leaders Barcelona and fifth-placed Espanyol is set to be played under intense security measures. While the fixture is traditionally charged with rivalry, this time the tension has escalated due to the controversial transfer of goalkeeper Juan Garcia from Espanyol to Barcelona.
Barcelona will visit Espanyol’s RCDE Stadium on Sunday, January 7, but the atmosphere is expected to be far from welcoming. Espanyol authorities have announced a strict ban on Barcelona jerseys, scarves, and any club-related symbols inside the stadium, citing safety concerns.

Strict Security Rules and Heavy Penalties Announced
According to Espanyol’s official statement, protective safety nets will be installed behind both goalposts to prevent crowd-related incidents. The club has made it clear that no supporter wearing Barcelona-related items will be granted entry.
“𝑬𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑹𝑪𝑫𝑬 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒖𝒎 𝒘𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒕𝒚𝒑𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒂 𝒄𝒍𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒓 𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒔𝒚𝒎𝒃𝒐𝒍 𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒍𝒚 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒉𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒅,” 𝑬𝒔𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒐𝒍 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝒂𝒏 𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆.
Home supporters have also been warned of severe disciplinary action if they violate the rules. Punishments may include stadium bans, suspension or cancellation of club memberships, and financial penalties ranging from €150 to as much as €650,000, depending on the seriousness of the offense. In extreme cases, membership bans could last up to five years.
League Context Adds to Derby Pressure
Barcelona currently sits top of the La Liga table with 46 points from 18 matches, holding a four-point advantage over arch-rivals Real Madrid, who are second with 42 points. Espanyol, having played one game fewer, are fifth with 33 points and remain firmly in the race for European qualification.
With league positions, local pride, and controversial transfers all colliding, Sunday’s derby is shaping up to be one of the most tightly controlled fixtures of the season.
