Real Madrid endured a disastrous evening at the Santiago Bernabeu, losing 2-0 to Celta Vigo amid injuries and multiple red cards. The setback has left the team’s morale shaken ahead of their crucial Champions League match against Manchester City on Wednesday.
Coach Alonso Vows Reaction Against Man City
Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso expressed his frustration over the defeat, criticizing the referee while promising a strong response against Manchester City.
“𝑾𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒓𝒚. 𝑾𝒆 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉 𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒖𝒍𝒕. 𝑴𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒐’𝒔 𝒊𝒏𝒋𝒖𝒓𝒚 𝒉𝒖𝒓𝒕 𝒖𝒔—𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒅𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒊𝒈𝒆𝒔𝒕,” 𝑨𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒐 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅, 𝒓𝒆𝒇𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒏 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒎’𝒔 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒈𝒈𝒍𝒆𝒔.
Williot Sudeberg scored both goals for Celta Vigo. Madrid’s center-back Eder Militao was forced off due to injury in the first half, while Fran Garcia and Alvaro Carreras were sent off, leaving Madrid four points behind league leaders Barcelona.
Alonso emphasized the importance of moving on quickly:
“𝑾𝒆 𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒂𝒅𝒂𝒑𝒕, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒈𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒅. 𝑾𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒐𝒇𝒇 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒃𝒂𝒅 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑪𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉.”
Referee Controversy and Team Responsibility
The Real Madrid coach was visibly unhappy with the officiating. Garcia received two yellow cards within two minutes, and Carreras was shown a red card at the end after disputing a decision.
“𝑰 𝒅𝒊𝒅𝒏’𝒕 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒆’𝒔 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑨𝒍𝒗𝒂𝒓𝒐 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒊𝒂𝒍. 𝑯𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒉𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒚—𝒊𝒕 𝒈𝒐𝒕 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒍,” 𝑨𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒐 𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒅.
Despite the disappointment, Alonso stressed that the blame lies with the team collectively: players, coach, and staff alike.
“𝑾𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚. 𝑻𝒉𝒓𝒆𝒆 𝒑𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒅, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆’𝒔 𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒂 𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒐. 𝑾𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒓𝒚, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒘𝒆 𝒎𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒔 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒙𝒕 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒆.”
