The West Indies cricket team has been fined 10 percent of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate during the fourth T20I against Australia at St. Kitts. Reon King handed down the sanction from the ICC International Panel of Match Referees after the Caribbean side was found to be two overs short, even after accounting for time allowances.
West Indies Penalised for Slow Over-Rate in St. Kitts
As per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, teams are penalised five percent of their match fees for each over they fail to complete in the allotted time. West Indies captain Shai Hope accepted the charge and the penalty, eliminating the need for a formal hearing. The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Gregory Brathwaite and Leslie Reifer, third umpire Zahid Bassarath, and fourth umpire Deighton Buttler.
Hope and Marsh Reflect on Match Performances
At the post-match presentation, Shai Hope reflected on the team’s performance and acknowledged some areas that needed improvement. “We understand how difficult it is to defend a score here,” he admitted. “Maybe we didn’t assess as well as we could have. That’s something we still need to look at going into the last game.”
Hope also stressed the importance of fielding in tight contests.
“𝑭𝒊𝒆𝒍𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒔 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝒈𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔, 𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒄𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇 𝒂 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈,” 𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒅𝒅𝒆𝒅. “𝑾𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒚 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒍𝒆𝒕 𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒔 𝒅𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝒂 𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒆.”
Meanwhile, Australian captain Mitchell Marsh praised his team’s comprehensive performance. “It was an all-round really good effort,” Marsh said.
“𝑻𝒐 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒂 𝒇𝒆𝒘 𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒚 𝒘𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒌𝒆𝒆𝒑 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈. 𝑰 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒂𝒏 𝒆𝒙𝒄𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒆𝒇𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒍𝒍, 𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒐𝒏 𝒂 𝒇𝒍𝒂𝒕 𝒑𝒊𝒕𝒄𝒉.”
Australia now leads the five-match series 4-0, with one game remaining.
