Test Cricket

Red-ball cricket is witnessing a paradigm shift as batters increasingly dictate terms against bowlers—and the India vs England 2025 Test series has further cemented that trend. In an extraordinary first, the ongoing five-match Test Cricket series has produced a record-breaking feat never before seen in 148 years of Test history: nine batters have crossed the 400-run mark in a single series.

This milestone sets a new benchmark in the format. The elite list features five Indians—Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, and Yashasvi Jaiswal—and four Englishmen—Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, and Harry Brook.

Test Cricket: Record-Breaking Run Tallies Dominate Oval Series

Shubman Gill leads the batting charts with a remarkable 754 runs across five Tests, including four centuries. Joe Root follows with 537 runs, while KL Rahul isn’t far behind at 532. Ravindra Jadeja (516) and Rishabh Pant (479) round out India’s contributions. From the England side, Duckett, Brook, Smith, and Jaiswal have also breached the 400-run milestone.

To put this achievement into perspective, only twice in the past had eight players scored over 400 runs in a single series—in the 1975–76 West Indies vs Australia series and during the 1993 Ashes. This makes the ongoing Test Cricket series a historic outlier.

“𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒂 𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝑻𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕. 𝑰𝒕’𝒔 𝒂 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒆𝒓𝒂 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒘𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒖𝒍𝒆𝒔,” 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅 𝒂 𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒐𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒚𝒔𝒕 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒃𝒓𝒐𝒂𝒅𝒄𝒂𝒔𝒕.

The first-ever Test Cricket was played in 1877, and the inaugural series began in 1884. In all those years, no series had ever seen nine batters cross 400 runs—until now.
