Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye became only the third Premier League player ever sent off for an offence against his own team-mate, after striking Michael Keane in the face during their 1-0 win at Manchester United.
The incident happened early in the match and earned the Senegal star a straight red card.
“Even though it’s unusual, these things happen between competitive players,” said manager David Moyes.
While only two similar red cards exist in league history, football has seen plenty of heated clashes between teammates that didn’t lead to a dismissal. Here are some of the most memorable ones.
Iconic Team-Mate Clashes Through the Years
Bruce Grobbelaar vs Steve McManaman (1993)
Liverpool keeper Grobbelaar grabbed and shoved young McManaman after a poor clearance led to an Everton goal. McManaman pushed back before walking away.
David Batty vs Graeme Le Saux (1995)
A miscommunication during Blackburn’s Champions League match sparked a furious row. Le Saux even broke his hand while swinging at Batty.
Lee Bowyer vs Kieron Dyer (2005)
Probably the most infamous bust-up. The Newcastle duo exchanged punches during a 3-0 loss to Aston Villa. Both were sent off, and Bowyer received a seven-game ban.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” commentators famously said at the time.
Emmanuel Adebayor vs Nicklas Bendtner (2008)
During a 5-1 defeat to Spurs, the Arsenal pair clashed, leaving Bendtner with a cut on his nose.
Ricardo Fuller vs Andy Griffin (2008)
Stoke’s Fuller slapped captain Griffin after a defensive mistake, earning himself an instant red card.
Anwar El Ghazi vs Tyrone Mings (2019)
A disagreement over tracking back nearly turned into a headbutt, but the Aston Villa teammates settled it by halftime.
Hugo Lloris vs Son Heung-min (2020)
Lloris confronted Son over defensive effort, shoving him as they walked off the pitch. The pair made up after the break.
Ben White vs Oleksandr Zinchenko (2024)
After conceding late against Forest, the Arsenal defenders clashed before staff intervened. Arteta later praised their passion.
Jack Robinson vs Vinicius Souza (2024)
A fiery exchange during Sheffield United’s defeat to Wolves led to a VAR check for violent conduct, though neither player was punished.
