South Africa Women bounced back in style as Tazmin Brits powered them to a commanding six-wicket win over New Zealand Women in Match 7 of the Women’s World Cup 2025 on Monday, October 6, at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. The Brits’ century not only sealed the victory but also reignited South Africa’s campaign after their disappointing loss to England, where they were bundled out for just 69 runs.
Brits Shine With Another Masterclass
Tazmin Brits continued her golden run in ODIs, smashing her fifth century of the year to lead South Africa’s chase with authority. The right-hander was in full control from the outset, dismantling the New Zealand bowling attack with 15 boundaries and a six in her 101 off 89 balls.
She brought up her century in style, nudging a single to long-off before celebrating with her trademark bow-and-arrow gesture, a moment that sent the crowd into raptures. Her teammates and fans rose to their feet to applaud the knock.
Speaking after the match, Brits said,
“𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒄𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒔 𝒂 𝒍𝒐𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒎𝒆—𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒔, 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒕𝒉, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒈𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒖𝒑. 𝑨𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒈𝒂𝒎𝒆, 𝒘𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒆 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒓.”
Luus Anchors Chase as South Africa Seals Comfortable Win
Chasing 232, South Africa’s innings revolved around the brilliant partnership between Brits and Sune Luus, who added a massive 159-run stand for the second wicket. Luus played the perfect anchor’s role, finishing unbeaten on 83 off 114 balls, guiding the Proteas home in just 40.5 overs.
Reflecting on the partnership, Luus said,
“𝑻𝒂𝒛𝒎𝒊𝒏 𝒔𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒚, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒚 𝒋𝒐𝒃 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒚 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒎 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒌𝒆𝒆𝒑 𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒌𝒆. 𝑾𝒆 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓’𝒔 𝒈𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒚𝒆𝒅 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆.”
Earlier, New Zealand—after opting to bat first—were bowled out for 231 in 47.5 overs. Skipper Sophie Devine once again led from the front with 85 off 98 balls, while Georgia Plimmer (31) and Brooke Halliday (45) made handy contributions. For South Africa, Nonkululeko Mlaba starred with the ball, returning figures of 4 for 40.
With this win, South Africa climbed to fifth place in the standings and will next face India on October 9 in Visakhapatnam, while New Zealand will meet Bangladesh on October 10 in Guwahati. Brits’ fiery knock and her bow-and-arrow celebration have undoubtedly lifted the team’s spirits as they look to maintain momentum in the tournament.
