Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill blamed poor fielding for his team’s defeat in the Eliminator match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. He admitted that his team conceded too many runs in the match against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur.

GT, chasing a huge target of 229 runs, tried their best to achieve the target. For Mumbai, Rohit Sharma played a brilliant innings of 81 runs in 50 balls, while Jonny Bairstow hit 47 runs in just 22 balls in his IPL 2025 debut. In response, Sai Sudarshan played a brilliant innings of 80 runs in 49 balls for GT and kept the hopes alive till the last overs. But due to a lack of support from the rest of the batsmen, the former champion had to face defeat.

Apart from Washington Sundar (48 off 24 balls), no other batsman could play an impressive innings. The team also missed Jos Buttler. Also, GT had to pay the price for dropping three easy catches in the first innings, due to which Mumbai scored 228/5 and GT fell behind by 20 runs.

Shubman Gill raised questions on GT’s fielding and bowling

Gill praised Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar, who batted brilliantly under pressure to keep the chase exciting. However, the Indian Test captain admitted that his team gave away at least 18 runs more on the Mullanpur pitch as three crucial catches were dropped.

Gill said,

“𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂 𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔, 𝒘𝒆 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒏𝒅. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒆𝒆-𝒇𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒈𝒐 𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒇𝒂𝒗𝒐𝒓, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉. 𝑫𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒆𝒆 𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒚 𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒖𝒔 𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒚.
