Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has criticized captain Shubman Gill for his role in Yashasvi Jaiswal’s run-out during the second Test of the ongoing India vs West Indies 2025 series at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Jaiswal, who was batting on a majestic 175 off 258 balls, was dismissed on the second delivery of Day 2 after a mix-up with Gill at the non-striker’s end. The dismissal ended what could have been another double century for the in-form opener.
“Gill Should Have Trusted Jaiswal’s Call” – Bangar
During a discussion on JioHotstar, Bangar explained that Gill’s hesitation in responding to Jaiswal’s call led to the unfortunate dismissal.
“𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒆𝒅, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒉𝒖𝒃𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝑮𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒂 𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒉𝒂𝒅 𝒂 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒏-𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒌𝒆𝒓’𝒔 𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒃𝒆𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒔𝒂𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 ‘𝒏𝒐’,” 𝑩𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒚𝒛𝒆𝒅. “𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒄𝒉 𝑱𝒂𝒊𝒔𝒘𝒂𝒍 𝒉𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒚 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒅𝒆 𝑮𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅-𝒈𝒖𝒆𝒔𝒔, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒌𝒆𝒓’𝒔. 𝑯𝒆 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕, 𝒂𝒔 𝑱𝒂𝒊𝒔𝒘𝒂𝒍 𝒉𝒂𝒅 𝒂𝒍𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒚 𝒄𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒂 𝒍𝒐𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒃𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒏.”
Jaiswal’s reaction on the field spoke volumes — after being run out by Tevin Imlach, the young opener glared at Gill before tapping his forehead in frustration, seemingly indicating that it was indeed his call.
Jaiswal Misses Out on a Third Double Ton
The dismissal denied Jaiswal what could have been his third Test double hundred. The 22-year-old had previously scored two double centuries in early 2024, both against England at home. His 175-run knock in Delhi now stands as his third-highest Test score, surpassing the 171 he made on debut against the same opposition in 2023.
India eventually declared their innings at 518/5 in 134.2 overs, with Gill remaining unbeaten on 129 off 196 balls. Wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel contributed a handy 44, while Jomel Warrican led the West Indies bowling effort with figures of 3/98 in 34 overs.
“𝑮𝒊𝒍𝒍’𝒔 𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒚, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒖𝒏-𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝑱𝒂𝒊𝒔𝒘𝒂𝒍 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒄𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒎𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 — 𝒊𝒕 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒅 𝒂 𝒍𝒂𝒑𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒘𝒐 𝒃𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎,” 𝑩𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒓 𝒂𝒅𝒅𝒆𝒅.
Despite the incident, India maintained control of the match, ending Day 2 in a commanding position over the visitors.
