South Africa has suffered a significant setback as young batting talent Dewald Brevis has been ruled out of the ongoing three-match ODI series against Pakistan. The exciting middle-order batter sustained a low-grade shoulder muscle strain during the third T20I, forcing him to miss the 50-over leg of the tour.

Brevis to Continue Rehabilitation in Pakistan

Cricket South Africa confirmed that no replacement has been named for Brevis. Instead of returning home, the youngster will remain with the squad and continue his recovery under medical supervision.

With this injury, Brevis joins Kwena Maphaka and Anrich Nortje on the sidelines, leaving South Africa with a heavily depleted unit. Several senior starsβ€”including Aiden Markram and Kagiso Rabadaβ€”were already rested for this series. As a result, the leadership responsibilities fall on Matthew Breetzke, who only made his ODI debut earlier this year.

Mixed Form in Pakistan Tour

Brevis has shown glimpses of talent during this all-format tour, including a gritty 54 in the Lahore Test, but his other scores β€” 0, 0, 9, 25, and 21 β€” highlight his struggles to convert starts. In six ODI matches so far, he has accumulated 110 runs, with a highest score of 49 against Australia earlier this year.

Proteas Aiming for ODI Turnaround

South Africa managed a strong red-ball response by winning the second Test and leveling the series 1-1. They also started the T20Is on a winning note before Pakistan bounced back to clinch the next two matches.

The ODI series is being played entirely at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.

  • 1st ODI: November 4
  • 2nd ODI: November 6
  • 3rd ODI: November 8

Following this tour, South Africa’s next challenge will be their all-format series against India, beginning with the first Test on November 14.
