Victor Osimhen proved once again why he is one of Africa’s top forwards, scoring twice in extra time to guide Nigeria to a 4-1 victory over Gabon in the 2026 World Cup African qualifying semifinal on Thursday. With this win, Nigeria now face Congo in the playoff final on Sunday, after Congo edged past Cameroon 1-0 with a stoppage-time goal from captain Chancel Mbemba.
The 25-year-old Napoli striker, who is also the leading scorer in the Champions League this season, struck in each half of extra time to seal the triumph for the Super Eagles. All playoff matches are being held in Rabat, Morocco.
“The team showed incredible character to push through extra time,” Osimhen said after the match. “Every player gave their all, and I’m proud to contribute to this win.”
Playoff Path and World Cup Hopes
The winner of the African playoffs will advance to the six-team intercontinental playoffs in March, where two teams will secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. So far, Bolivia (CONMEBOL) and New Caledonia (Oceania) have already qualified for the intercontinental playoffs.
Nigeria’s route to victory was dramatic. The match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, with Akor Adams putting the Super Eagles ahead before Mario Lemina’s deflected shot for Gabon leveled the score in the dying moments of regular time. Substitute Chidera Ejuke then restored Nigeria’s advantage before Osimhen completed the scoring in extra time.
Coach Jose Peseiro praised his squad, saying: “This is a big step for Nigeria. The players stayed focused, worked as a team, and showed they have what it takes to challenge for a World Cup spot.”
Nigeria last appeared in a World Cup in 2018, and this victory moves them closer to returning to football’s biggest stage.
