Xabi Alonso’s seven-and-a-half-month spell at Real Madrid has come to an abrupt end, sparking widespread speculation that former Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp could be in line to take over at the Bernabéu. Klopp, who stepped away from Anfield in 2024 and now serves as Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer, has moved quickly to address the swirling reports.

Speaking to Austrian broadcaster Servus TV, the German coach made it clear that he has not been contacted by the Spanish giants since Alonso’s departure.

“𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒆 𝒓𝒖𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒔 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒂 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒆, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒐 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒎𝒆,” 𝑲𝒍𝒐𝒑𝒑 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒂 𝒔𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒆. “𝒀𝒆𝒔, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒉𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈 — 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑴𝒂𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒅.”

Klopp Reflects on Alonso’s Exit

Klopp admitted he was surprised by Alonso’s dismissal and believes it highlights the intense pressure that comes with managing a club of Real Madrid’s stature. He praised the former midfielder’s coaching ability while pointing to the challenges of following a legendary figure like Carlo Ancelotti.

“𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒂𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒂 𝒄𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝑨𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒕𝒕𝒊 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒓𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒔, 𝒊𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝒅𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕. 𝑨𝒕 𝒂 𝒄𝒍𝒖𝒃 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒍 𝑴𝒂𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒅, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝒔𝒌𝒚-𝒉𝒊𝒈𝒉,” 𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒅.

The former Liverpool manager also shared his sympathy for Alonso, expressing confidence in his long-term future in football. Klopp suggested the summer could bring major changes across the coaching landscape, but emphasized that he is content in his current role.

For now, the much-talked-about Real Madrid link remains just that — talk — as Klopp continues to watch events unfold from the sidelines.
