Essex‘s wait for a win in the Vitality Blast continued as heavy rain denied them a potential victory against Sussex at Hove, despite a stellar all-round performance led by England’s Jordan Cox.
In a match reduced to 17 overs per side due to earlier rain, Jordan Cox produced a thrilling 47-ball 82, featuring four consecutive sixes off Jack Carson. His aggressive innings powered Essex to an impressive total of 177 for 4. Cox built a strong third-wicket partnership of 115 runs in 9.1 overs with Paul Walter, who scored a brisk 35 from 22 balls.
Dean Elgar had given Essex a strong start, smashing 33 off 18 deliveries, hitting seven boundaries. Sussex’s bowlers struggled to contain the Essex batters, with three overs conceding 70 runs. Captain Tymal Mills had to withdraw himself from the attack after two bouncers in his first five balls cost 25 runs.
Cox continued his onslaught with three sixes over the leg side and a straight six off Carson in the eighth over, followed by another six off James Coles in the tenth. Henry Crocombe was the pick of Sussex’s bowlers, grabbing 2 for 28, including the dismissals of Walter and Cox — the latter caught brilliantly by Harrison Ward at deep backward square.
Rain Halts Essex’s Dominance
Sussex’s chase started disastrously. Shane Snater struck immediately, bowling Harrison Ward with the very first delivery and removing captain John Simpson before the first over ended. In his second over, Snater got rid of James Coles, thanks to a sharp catch by Cox standing up to the stumps, leaving Sussex reeling at 23 for 3 after just 3.1 overs.
That’s when rain returned, and after a short wait, the umpires called off the match, leaving both sides to share points.
Despite the disappointment, Jordan Cox remained upbeat, saying:
“𝑰𝒕 𝒇𝒆𝒍𝒕 𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒊𝒅𝒅𝒍𝒆. 𝑰𝒕’𝒔 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒖𝒏𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒄𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒘𝒆 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒍. 𝑯𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒇𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒚, 𝒘𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒎𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒖𝒎 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅.”
Essex, still without a win in the tournament, will hope to convert such strong performances into victories in the upcoming matches.
