India vs Pakistan: Shikhar Dhawan

Veteran Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan once again made headlines during the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 by refusing to play against Pakistan Champions, echoing the decision taken by several Indian players in light of heightened political tensions.

India vs Pakistan League Match Called Off

The India vs Pakistan fixture, initially scheduled for July 20, was cancelled after Indian players, including Dhawan, chose not to participate. This decision came after the Pahalgam terror attack and the ensuing Operation Sindoor, which worsened diplomatic relations between the two nations. The tournament organisers later issued an apology for “unintentionally causing discomfort” by scheduling the high-voltage match under such circumstances.

Dhawan Holds Firm: ‘Won’t Play Now or in Knockouts’

While speaking to reporters during the tournament, Dhawan was asked if he would consider playing against Pakistan should both teams reach the knockout stages. Visibly irked, the former Indian opener rejected the idea firmly.

“Brother, you’re asking this question at the wrong place right now. If you’re asking that, do you think I’m going to answer? You shouldn’t be asking this question. And if I haven’t played earlier, then I still won’t play,” Dhawan responded.

Earlier, Dhawan had posted on social media ahead of the league match, confirming his withdrawal. “For me, my country stands above all else,” he wrote, expressing national solidarity.

Can India Still Face Pakistan in Knockouts?

Pakistan is virtually assured of a semi-final berth, leading the points table with three victories from four matches. They will play their final league game against the Australia Champions on July 29.

In contrast, India, the defending WCL champions, is struggling at the bottom of the table after losing two of their first three matches. To keep their knockout hopes alive, India must win both of their remaining games—against England on July 27 and West Indies on July 29.

Whether the arch-rivals clash again in the knockout stage remains uncertain, but Dhawan’s message is clear: his priorities lie beyond the pitch.
