Guyana Amazon Warriors secured a commanding 66-run triumph over Central Districts in their opening match of the Global Super League 2025 at Providence. This emphatic win propelled the Warriors to the top of the points table, while Central Districts slipped to the bottom after suffering their second consecutive defeat.
Gurbaz and Andrew Lead the Charge with the Bat
After being put in to bat, Warriors lost Johnson Charles and Moeen Ali early. But Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Jewel Andrew steadied the innings with a vital 84-run partnership off 63 deliveries for the third wicket. Andrew was dismissed for 45 from 29 balls due to a run-out in the 15th over, while Gurbaz followed shortly after for 58 off 47. The lower order couldn’t capitalise much, adding only 28 runs in the last four overs, and Warriors finished at 158 for 6.
“We always back ourselves to post competitive totals, but we felt we left 15-20 runs out there,” said Warriors’ skipper.
Tahir and Company Tear Through Central Districts
Chasing 159, Central Districts faltered right from the outset. Dwaine Pretorius struck in the opening over, removing Dane Cleaver. The top order collapsed under pressure and the scoreboard read a dismal 23 for 4 by the end of the powerplay.
Imran Tahir further tightened the screws with a double strike in the 13th over. David Wiese then wrapped things up in the 15th, dismissing Will Young, who top-scored with 26 from 29 balls. Central Districts were bundled out for just 92 in 14.2 overs.
“It was one of those days where everything clicked for us with the ball,” said Tahir, who returned impressive figures of 4 for 23.
Pretorius claimed 3 for 18 and Wiese contributed with 2 for 13, ensuring the Warriors cruised to an easy win and a bonus boost to their net run rate.
