End of an Era: Glenn Maxwell Announces Retirement from ODI Cricket

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially announced his retirement from ODI cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable career that began in 2012. In 149 ODIs, He scored 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81 and a stunning strike rate of 126.70, alongside 77 wickets with his handy offspin. Known for his electric fielding, Maxwell also took 91 catches.

Maxwell Reflects on His ODI Career

Maxwell, part of Australia’s World Cup-winning teams in 2015 and 2023, is best remembered for his unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan during the 2023 ICC World Cup—a knock often hailed as the greatest innings in ODI history.

In a chat with the Final Word Podcast, he reflected:

His last ODI came against India in the Champions Trophy 2025. Due to a leg injury, Maxwell missed the ongoing IPL season.

Future Focus: T20s, BBL, and World Cup 2026

Cricket Australia confirmed Glenn made this decision to prioritize preparation for the T20 World Cup 2026, to be hosted in India and Sri Lanka. He also plans to commit more to the Big Bash League and international T20s.

George Bailey Praises Maxwell’s Contribution

Chair of selectors George Bailey lauded Glenn as “one of ODI cricket’s most dynamic players” and emphasized his importance for Australia’s T20 future.
