Essex celebrated a rare victory in their Metro Bank Women’s One-Day Cup campaign, defeating Warwickshire by 27 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method at Edgbaston Community Sports Ground. Essex posted 235 for 7 in 32 overs, with Jo Gardner top-scoring with 47, while Georgia Davis impressed with a four-wicket haul (4-35).

Strong Opening and Rain Interruption

Essex started aggressively, with openers Ariana Dowse (36) and Grace Scrivens putting on 67 runs before falling in successive overs just before a lengthy rain delay. Scrivens was caught at mid-off, while Dowse was dismissed by Davis. After the rain break, Essex resumed with only 32 overs, losing early wickets but regaining momentum through Jodi Grewcock (39) and Gardner, who added 69 runs together.

Sophie Munro (36*) and Amara Carr (17*) provided a late boost, contributing an unbroken 55-run partnership to help Essex reach their revised total.

Maqsood and MacGregor Dominate Bowling

In response, Warwickshire faced a challenging chase of 232 from 32 overs. Early breakthroughs from Abtaha Maqsood (3-34) and Esmae MacGregor (3-38) put the visitors on the back foot. Despite an impressive 56-run innings from 18-year-old Amu Surenkumar, Warwickshire could only manage 204 for 8 under difficult light conditions.

Davis highlighted the importance of discipline in the bowling:

Essex’s late flourish, combined with disciplined bowling, secured their second win of the season in 12 matches, giving the team a morale boost despite an otherwise disappointing campaign.
