Cristiano Ronaldo has officially been cleared to play in Portugal’s opening match at next summer’s World Cup, despite the red card he received during the qualifying defeat to the Republic of Ireland earlier this month. The decision ensures that Cristiano Ronaldo will remain a key figure for Portugal as they prepare for another major tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Red Card and Suspension Decision

During the qualifier, Ronaldo was sent off for an elbow incident involving Dara O’Shea, raising concerns about whether he would miss matches at the World Cup. Normally, such conduct results in a three-match suspension. However, Cristiano Ronaldo received a reduced sanction, with only one match served immediately and the remaining two suspended for a year.
Officials noted that this was Cristiano Ronaldo’s first red card in 226 international appearances, which heavily influenced the ruling.

Ronaldo has already missed Portugal’s 16 November game against Armenia, meaning he will be fully available for the World Cup in the United States next summer.

In its statement, FIFA warned that if Ronaldo commits a similar offence during the probation period, the suspended portion of the ban would automatically apply.

Ronaldo scored five goals throughout qualifying as Portugal topped Group F, securing their seventh consecutive World Cup appearance.

All 48 qualified teams will discover their group-stage opponents during the draw on Friday, 5 December, which will be broadcast live on E28 Sports
