Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has been charged by the Football Association (FA) following his Cristian Romero red card in last weekend’s 2-1 home defeat against Liverpool. The Argentine centre-back received two yellow cards—one for dissent after Hugo Ekitike’s goal and another in stoppage time for kicking out at Ibrahima Konate as Spurs chased a late equaliser.
Romero’s red card left Tottenham with nine men after Xavi Simons’ red card in the first half, upgraded from a yellow following a VAR review for a foul on Virgil van Dijk. Romero argued with referee John Brooks before eventually leaving the field. The FA has charged him for allegedly “acting in an improper manner by failing to promptly leave the field of play and/or behaving in a confrontational and/or aggressive manner towards the match referee after being sent off,” following the Cristian Romero red card.
Romero has until January 2 to respond to the FA charge related to the Cristian Romero red card. If found guilty, he could face an extended suspension or fine. He is already banned for Tottenham’s last 2025 match against Crystal Palace on December 28 but is expected to return for the Premier League opener of 2026 against Brentford on New Year’s Day. Spurs then face Sunderland on January 4 and travel to Bournemouth three days later.

“There was a massive mistake by John on the pitch—two hands on the back by Ekitike. I don’t understand how he didn’t see it. Thankfully, we have VAR, which should have helped, but it didn’t. If the referee had done his job, I don’t think Romero would have received the first yellow. I have a passionate player, and sometimes passion leads you to the line,” Frank said, referring to the Cristian Romero red card incident.
