The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled the shortlist of nominees for the African Footballer of the Year 2025, celebrating the continent’s top talent across global and domestic competitions. The announcement, made at a press conference in Cairo, has sparked excitement among fans, pundits, and national associations alike as some of Africa’s biggest stars compete for one of the game’s most prestigious individual honours.

Star-Studded List Across Europe and Africa

The list features a mix of established superstars and rising sensations who have made a significant impact this season. Among the leading nominees are Mohamed Salah (Liverpool), Victor Osimhen (Napoli), Achraf Hakimi (Paris Saint-Germain), and Thomas Partey (Aston Villa) — all of whom have impressed with consistent performances in Europe’s top leagues.

Additionally, breakout talent such as Youssouf Fofana (Nice) and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku (Sporting CP) make the list, showcasing the depth of African talent emerging on the world stage.

“This year’s nominees represent not only individual excellence but also the growing influence of African players in elite football,” said CAF President Patrice Motsepe during the announcement.

The final winner will be selected by a panel comprising former players, coaches, and journalists, with fan voting also contributing to the outcome — a first in the award’s history.

Award Ceremony Set to Inspire New Generations

The winner of the African Footballer of the Year 2025 will be revealed at the CAF Awards Gala in Accra later this year, where other honours — including Coach of the Year and Young Player of the Year — will also be presented.

Fans and football communities across Africa have already begun debating the likely winner on social media, with passionate discussions about who deserves the top spot based on goals, leadership, and overall influence on the pitch.

Nominees have praised the recognition, with many expressing pride in representing their countries and the continent as a whole.

The CAF Awards continue to grow in prestige, shining a spotlight on the extraordinary contributions of African footballers to the global game.
