Brian Lara Says Test Cricket Needs Virat Kohli

Former West Indies great Brian Lara said Virat Kohli should not retire from Test cricket. Earlier on Saturday, some media reports emerged that the 36-year-old Kohli had approached the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding his decision to quit playing the game’s longest format.

However, a senior board official spoke to Kohli and asked him to reconsider the decision. Brian Lara, the only batsman to score 400 runs in an innings of Test cricket, said in his Instagram post that Kohli will bat at an average above 60 for the rest of his Test career.

Brian Lara wrote,

“𝘛𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘝𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘵!! 𝘏𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘶𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘥. 𝘏𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘛𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘵. 𝘝𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘵 𝘒𝘰𝘩𝘭𝘪 𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘷𝘦 60 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘛𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘳.”

Virat Kohli’s performance in the BGT series was disappointing

Kohli did not have a good time when India toured Australia for the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He scored a century in the second innings of the opening Test in Perth, leading India to a 295-run win. But after that, Kohli flopped in the next eight innings and India lost the series 1-3 with defeats in Melbourne, Adelaide, and Sydney.

Recently, Rohit Sharma also ended his 11-year Test career. Rohit’s retirement means India must choose a new captain for their upcoming England tour. In such a situation, if Kohli also retires, Team India may get into trouble on the England tour.
