The Red Devils, one of England’s most historic clubs, have managed just one win in their last five matches and have failed to dominate even teams near the bottom of the table. The club currently sits sixth in the league, far below expectations.

Amorim Pays the Price for Poor Results

United’s most recent setback was a 1-1 draw away to Leeds United, a result that further highlighted the team’s lack of consistency. Reports suggest Amorim had already hinted at tension between himself and the club hierarchy.

Despite previously stating he would see out his contract, the club’s board acted swiftly. In an official statement, United said changes were needed “to push the team to the highest possible position,” while thanking Amorim for his efforts and wishing him success in the future.

Amorim, who took charge in November 2024, won 25 of his 63 matches as United manager.

Darren Fletcher Handed Interim Role

Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has been appointed as interim head coach, marking his first role in charge of a senior team. He will take charge of United’s next Premier League fixture against Burnley on Wednesday.

Fletcher has previously worked as United’s technical director under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and is currently coaching the club’s under-18 side. His appointment signals a temporary internal solution as the club assesses long-term options.

BBC Sport reported that the board reached its decision after failing to see the expected progress under Amorim this season.

Reflecting on his future earlier, Amorim had said, “If not as a coach, I will continue working as a manager. I will leave when my contract expires.” However, events moved faster than anticipated.

Fletcher, who played for United from 2002 to 2015, enjoyed a trophy-laden career, winning five Premier League titles and one Champions League, and now faces the challenge of steadying the club during a difficult period.
