Xabi Alonso and his Real Madrid squad find themselves in a far tougher situation than anticipated. With only two victories and three draws in their last eight fixtures, Los Blancos are slipping behind both in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. Many expected the clash against Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabéu to be Alonso’s big test — a test he ultimately failed as Real fell 2-1 at home.
After the defeat, Alonso defended his players, praising their commitment:
“𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒈𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒉𝒂𝒅 — 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆’𝒔 𝒏𝒐 𝒓𝒐𝒐𝒎 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒔𝒎 𝒕𝒐𝒅𝒂𝒚.”
He admitted the results have not been satisfactory, but stressed the need to fight on:
“𝑾𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝒘𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒇𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒏.”
Alonso Real Players Back Their Coach Despite Mounting Criticism
Alonso acknowledged the realities of managing a club of Real Madrid’s stature, saying that pressure and criticism are part of the job.
“You are the coach of Real Madrid — you must face every situation with courage, responsibility, and self-criticism,” he noted. He added that although results are poor, he has seen “positive aspects” and insists the team is still fighting.
Uncertainty remains over Alonso’s long-term future. After a trophyless previous season, doubts continue to grow. Still, several Real players voiced strong support for their coach.
Jude Bellingham was quick to defend him:
“𝑶𝒖𝒓 𝒄𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒊𝒔 𝒇𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒄. 𝑯𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒔 100% 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒖𝒔. 𝑵𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒖𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒈𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒖𝒑 𝒐𝒓 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈.”
Reports had suggested a rift between Alonso and some players, including Rodrygo. However, the Brazilian dismissed those claims while admitting the team is going through a tough period.
“We wanted to show that we are all behind the coach… We are united,” Rodrygo said.
Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois echoed the same sentiment, acknowledging the team’s struggles but insisting the dressing room remains firmly behind Alonso:
“We showed today that we are all on the coach’s side.”
