Abdur Razzak Resigns as Selector to Contest BCB Elections

Former Bangladesh left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak has stepped down from his role as a national selector to participate in the upcoming Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections. The 43-year-old has officially collected his nomination papers and will contest as a director candidate from the Khulna division on October 6.

Razzak, one of Bangladesh’s most successful bowlers, represented the country in 13 Tests, 153 ODIs, and 34 T20Is, and still ranks as the third-highest wicket-taker in ODIs for his nation. He is among 61 nominees vying for 23 director positions in the elections.

Election Landscape and Razzak’s Statement

The upcoming election will see 23 of the 25 board directors chosen by the councillors, while the BCB president will be elected from the pool of 25 directors for a four-year term. Notably, incumbent president Aminul Islam and former captain Tamim Iqbal have both confirmed their candidacy for the top role.

In his resignation note, Razzak shared his reflections:

“𝑰 𝒉𝒂𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒎 𝒇𝒐𝒓 14 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒈𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒇𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔. 𝑰 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒑 𝒅𝒐𝒘𝒏… 𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒃𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒐𝒏 𝒂 𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒓 𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒆.”

Razzak had joined the selection panel in 2021 and became one of the two key selectors after Hannan Sarkar’s resignation in 2023, working closely with chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain.

Ashraf praised his colleague’s efforts, stating:

“𝑯𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒂𝒏 𝒊𝒏𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒎𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒍 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒃𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒖𝒃𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔. 𝑾𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒌 𝒉𝒊𝒎 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒃𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒔𝒉 𝒉𝒊𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒃𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆.”

With his resignation, Razzak now turns his focus to shaping the future of Bangladesh cricket through administrative leadership.
