Mushfiqur Rahim has announced his retirement from international ODI cricket after the T20s. Since the announcement made on social media, former and current national team teammates, BCB and foreign stars have been wishing him well. BCB President Faruk Ahmed has commented that Bangladesh will continue to benefit from Mushfiqur, who has built a 19-year career.
Mushfiqur announced his retirement from ODIs in a Facebook post yesterday (Wednesday) night. In light of this, the BCB issued a statement congratulating him on Thursday. Mushfiqur was involved in many of Bangladesh’s best moments in ODIs and everyone has something to learn from him, BCB President Faruk said in the statement.
He said, “The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) expresses its gratitude for the extraordinary service provided by Mushfiqur in ODIs. After a colorful career of two decades, he has ended his ODI career. The BCB recognizes the extraordinary dedication, passion and professionalism that Mushfiqur has brought to Bangladesh’s ODI cricket. His contribution in batting and wicketkeeping has played an immense role in the progress of the country’s cricket.”
In the release, Faruk Ahmed further said, “Mushfiqur Rahim’s work ethic, tenacity and unwavering determination are examples that will inspire the next generation. His name will come up brightly when talking about Bangladesh’s best ODI moments. Playing in this format for 19 years is an incredible achievement, which speaks volumes about his consistency and character. I am sure he can still give a lot to cricket and we want to see and learn a lot from him on and off the field.”
Mushfiqur holds the record of playing the most ODI matches for Bangladesh with 274. He is also the second highest run scorer (7795) for Bangladesh in the format. He has also taken 243 catches behind the stumps and 56 stumpings. Mushfiqur is also the most successful wicketkeeper in the history of Bangladesh ODI cricket. He captained Bangladesh in 37 ODIs. He has played five ODI World Cups in his 19-year career.
