Rohit Sharma

Former Australian batter Mark Waugh has voiced strong criticism of the Decision Review System (DRS) following a controversial moment involving Rohit Sharma during the second ODI between Australia and India in Adelaide. The incident occurred when a delivery from Josh Hazlewood hit Rohit on the pads, but the third umpire overturned the on-field LBW decision, ruling in favour of the Indian skipper.

Rohit went on to score a vital 73 off 97 deliveries, helping India post 264/9 in 50 overs after electing to bat first.

“I Can’t See an Inside Edge There,” Says Waugh

Waugh, analysing the replay for Fox Cricket, questioned the accuracy of the Snickometer reading that indicated a faint inside edge. The Australian great felt that the front-on camera angle clearly showed no bat contact before the ball struck the pads.

“𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒔𝒆𝒆 𝑯𝒂𝒛𝒍𝒆𝒘𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈, ‘𝑰 𝒅𝒊𝒅𝒏’𝒕 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈.’ 𝑰 𝒄𝒂𝒏’𝒕 𝒔𝒆𝒆 𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒉𝒆’𝒔 𝒉𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕. 𝑰 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒌𝒐𝒏 𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒐𝒏 𝒊𝒕. 𝑰 𝒄𝒂𝒏’𝒕 𝒔𝒆𝒆 𝒂𝒏 𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝒆𝒅𝒈𝒆 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕, 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒉𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒚𝒐𝒖,” — 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒌 𝑾𝒂𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒐𝒏 𝑭𝒐𝒙 𝑪𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕

Despite Hazlewood’s disbelief, the third umpire ruled in Rohit’s favour, sparking debate among fans and pundits alike. At that point, India were 17/0 in six overs.

Rohit and Iyer Anchor India’s Innings

After the early dismissals of Shubman Gill (9) and Virat Kohli (0), Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer (61 off 77) steadied the innings with a 118-run partnership for the third wicket. Their stand provided much-needed stability before the middle-order faltered late in the innings.

Leg-spinner Adam Zampa (4/60) and pacer Xavier Bartlett (3/39) were the pick of Australia’s bowlers, while Hazlewood maintained tight control, conceding just 29 runs in his 10 overs.

“𝑹𝒐𝒉𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒅 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒂 𝒕𝒐𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝑹𝑺 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒅𝒆𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒚 𝒎𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒖𝒎,” 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅 𝒂 𝑭𝒐𝒙 𝑪𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓 𝒅𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒓𝒐𝒂𝒅𝒄𝒂𝒔𝒕.

Mitchell Marsh used eight bowlers in total as Australia restricted India to a competitive total.
