Women’s World Cup 2025: New Zealand Fall Short as Pakistan Seal Crucial Victory

Pakistan

Persistent rain once again disrupted proceedings at the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, as the much-anticipated clash between Pakistan Women and New Zealand Women at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium was abandoned without a result. This marked the fourth match of the tournament to be washed out — all occurring in Colombo due to continuous downpours.

As a result, South Africa became the second team to seal a semifinal berth, joining Australia, while Pakistan’s hopes for qualification are all but over. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s path to the knockout stage has become even more challenging.

Rain washes out Match 19 in Colombo

The contest was constantly interrupted by rain, eventually being reduced to 36 overs per side. However, Pakistan could only manage 92/5 in 25 overs before the weather returned to spoil the game once more. Despite repeated efforts from the ground staff, conditions never improved enough for play to resume, forcing officials to call off the match.

“𝑰𝒕’𝒔 𝒖𝒏𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒚𝒆𝒕 𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏,” 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅 𝑷𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏 𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒂 𝑺𝒂𝒏𝒂 𝒂𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉.

Pakistan’s decision to bat first didn’t pay off as their top order faltered. New Zealand’s bowlers dominated early, keeping the scoring rate in check and picking up crucial wickets.

Key Performances

Aliya Riaz stood out for Pakistan with a composed 28 off 52 balls, including three boundaries, while Muneeba Ali added 22 off 26 balls at the top.

For New Zealand, pacer Lea Tahuhu continued her fine form, claiming 2 for 20 in six overs. Jess Kerr, Eden Carson, and Amelia Kerr chipped in with one wicket each to maintain constant pressure on Pakistan’s batting unit.

“𝑶𝒖𝒓 𝒃𝒐𝒘𝒍𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒆𝒙𝒆𝒄𝒖𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒔 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒍𝒚 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔,” 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅 𝑵𝒆𝒘 𝒁𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒌𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒓 𝑺𝒐𝒑𝒉𝒊𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒆, 𝒓𝒆𝒇𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒏 𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒎’𝒔 𝒆𝒇𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚.

What’s Next?

With both teams sharing a point each, Pakistan now sits on two points from five matches, remaining winless and effectively out of semifinal contention. New Zealand, on the other hand, stays fifth with four points.

Pakistan’s next fixture will be against South Africa on October 21 in Colombo, while New Zealand will face India on October 23 in Navi Mumbai.
