World Cup 2025

The Greenfield International Stadium in Karyavattom, Thiruvananthapuram, is set to host several matches of the upcoming ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025. The 13th edition of the tournament will be held in India and Sri Lanka from September 30 to November 2 this year.

Initially, four fixtures were scheduled at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. However, the venue lost hosting rights after a tragic stampede on June 4 claimed 11 lives and injured more than 50 people during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL title celebrations.

“𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒇𝒂𝒏 𝒔𝒂𝒇𝒆𝒕𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒉𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒚, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒖𝒆𝒔 𝒎𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒎𝒆𝒆𝒕 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒓𝒆𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒔,” 𝒂𝒏 𝑰𝑪𝑪 𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒅.

Safety Concerns Prompt Venue Change

This isn’t the first relocation involving the Chinnaswamy Stadium in recent months. During the ongoing Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 2025, matches were shifted to the Srikantadatta Narasimha Raja Wadeyar Ground due to safety concerns over managing large crowds. The domestic tournament is currently taking place behind closed doors, with only match officials permitted inside.

According to Onmanorama, it’s still uncertain how many of Chinnaswamy’s original matches will be reassigned to Trivandrum. The Greenfield International Stadium is the region’s only operational international cricket venue, as Kochi’s Nehru Stadium now exclusively hosts football matches. The last men’s ODI played there was India vs Sri Lanka in January 2023.

Tournament Returns to India After 12 Years

This year’s Women’s ODI World Cup marks the tournament’s return to Indian soil after more than a decade, last hosted in 2013. Back then, India Women finished last in Group A, winning only one of their three matches. Australia enters this edition as the defending champion, having defeated England by 71 runs in the 2022 final. Alyssa Healy claimed both the Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards for her brilliant performances.

Each team will play seven group-stage matches before progressing to the knockout rounds.
