David Focused on T20 Cricket, No Immediate ODI Plans

Tim David Rules Out Immediate Return to ODI Cricket

Tim David has clarified that despite Australia’s need to rebuild their ODI squad after the retirements of Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and Steven Smith, he has no current intention to return to 50-over cricket. While selectors see his T20 finishing skills as potentially valuable for ODIs, David said he isn’t planning any List A games to push for selection.

“I’m not too sure, to be honest. It’s not the immediate plan,” David explained. “We’ve got such a busy year leading up to this T20 World Cup.”

David last played an ODI in 2023 and has not featured in a domestic one-day match since 2021. He remains contracted with the Hobart Hurricanes and is focusing on recovery from a hamstring injury picked up during the IPL, where he contributed to Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s title run.

Busy T20 Schedule and Hurricanes Commitment

The injury kept David from appearing in the Global Super League for the Hurricanes but he is confident about being fit for the T20I tour of the Caribbean starting July 20. Australia’s calendar is packed, including eight consecutive T20Is against West Indies, South Africa, New Zealand, and India in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup.

“I’ve probably got a couple of things I need to tick off with the CA guys when I get over to Jamaica,” he said of his rehab progress.

David also confirmed he has re-signed with the Hurricanes for another two BBL seasons despite speculation he could leave. He cited logistical delays with the BBL’s new ten-player rule as the reason for the contract announcement lagging behind.

“There wasn’t any uncertainty [for me],” he said. “There was always good communication throughout that period.”
