Shubman Gill Earns High Praise from India Legend for His Calm and Composure

Shubman Gill

Former India captain Anil Kumble has showered praise on Shubman Gill for his impressive consistency and composure in Test cricket since taking over as India’s full-time red-ball captain. Gill’s performances with the bat and his leadership have drawn attention from several cricketing greats, including Kumble, who believes the young skipper is showing qualities far beyond his years.

Speaking on JioHotstar, Kumble admired how Gill has embraced the pressure of captaincy while continuing to perform at a high level with the bat.

“𝑪𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒂 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒚. 𝑰𝒕’𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒏-𝒇𝒊𝒆𝒍𝒅 𝒅𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒂𝒍𝒔𝒐 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇𝒇 𝒊𝒕, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒉𝒖𝒃𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒅𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒆𝒙𝒄𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍. 𝑶𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒆𝒍𝒅, 𝒉𝒆’𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒃𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓, 𝒉𝒆’𝒔 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒚,” 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅 𝑲𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒍𝒆.

The legendary spinner further highlighted Gill’s smart batting display on Day 2 of the second Test against the West Indies in Delhi, where the skipper remained unbeaten on 129.

“𝑯𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒍𝒚, 𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒆𝒅, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆. 𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝒂 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒈 𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏, 𝒕𝒐 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒔𝒖𝒄𝒉 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒆𝒔 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒂’𝒔 𝒇𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆,” 𝑲𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒂𝒅𝒅𝒆𝒅.

Daren Ganga Applauds Gill’s Temperament and Consistency

Echoing Kumble’s remarks, former West Indies batter Daren Ganga also lauded Gill’s ability to separate his dual responsibilities as batter and captain, something not easy for a young leader.

“𝑰𝒕 𝒅𝒆𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔 𝒉𝒊𝒎 𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒆𝒓 — 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒒𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚, 𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕. 𝑯𝒊𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒗𝒆. 𝑯𝒆’𝒔 𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒍𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒅𝒅𝒆𝒅 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒚 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍,” 𝑮𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒂 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒅.

Ganga further emphasized that Gill’s approach reflects long-term leadership potential for India.

“𝑺𝒉𝒖𝒃𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝑮𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒊𝒔 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍, 𝒃𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒇𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒔 𝒔𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒎 𝒐𝒇 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒂 𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆,” 𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒍𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒅.

Gill, who earlier led India to a memorable series draw against England, has been in sublime touch. He amassed 754 runs in five matches to top the charts as the leading run-scorer. Continuing that form, his unbeaten 129 in the ongoing Delhi Test reaffirmed his growing stature as one of India’s most dependable Test batters.
