Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has jumped to the second position in the latest ICC ODI batting rankings, released on August 13. The 38-year-old, despite not featuring in any international matches since IPL 2025, moved up one spot, overtaking Pakistan’s Babar Azam, who dropped to third after a disappointing series against the West Indies.

The hitman now sits just behind Shubman Gill, who leads the chart with 784 points. Rohit has 756 points, only 28 fewer than Gill, while Babar holds 751 points in third place. Former India captain Virat Kohli occupies the fourth position with 736 points.

Both Rohit and Kohli will have the chance to boost their rankings further in the upcoming India vs Australia ODI series scheduled for October 2025.
No Rush on Rohit and Virat’s Future
This rankings boost comes amid ongoing speculation about the international futures of Rohit and Kohli. The BCCI has clarified that no “hasty decisions” will be made regarding their careers. Earlier media reports had suggested the two might announce their ODI retirements after the Australia series, but those rumors have cooled.
He is currently training in Mumbai under the guidance of former India assistant coach Abhishek Nair, while Kohli has been working on his game through indoor net sessions.

India Dominates ODI Rankings
India now boasts five players in the top 15 of the ICC ODI batting rankings. Apart from Gill, Rohit, and Kohli, Shreyas Iyer is ranked 8th, and KL Rahul sits at 15th.
Rohit and Kohli last represented India during the 2025 Champions Trophy. Both had announced their retirement from Test cricket during IPL 2025. While they were expected to make their comeback in August 2025, the ODI series against Bangladesh was postponed to next year, delaying their return.
