R Ashwin’s Big Statement: This Player Should Be India’s Next Test Captain, Gill-Bumrah or Pant

R Ashwin

Former Indian spinner R. Ashwin believes that star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, the most experienced player in the current Test team, should be considered for the captaincy role for the next two years. The BCCI selectors are expected to announce the Indian team for the upcoming Test tour against England in the last week of May. India will also get its next Test captain in this series.

Speaking on this issue with former Tamil Nadu opener Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan on his YouTube channel, the two were discussing who could become the next captain of the Indian Test team? Just like Ashwin finds unconventional solutions in his bowling, he suggested something similar with regard to captaincy.

Amidst the ongoing race between Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah, Ashwin mentioned Ravindra Jadeja’s name and said why can’t he become the captain? Jadeja has been the number one Test all-rounder for a long time. He also has a lot of experience. He can be appointed as India’s next Test captain.

R Ashwin told why Ravindra Jadeja should be made the Test captain

Ashwin questioned,

“𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒂𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑮𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏. 𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒈𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒅𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒂 𝒃𝒊𝒈 𝒐𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎 𝒐𝒇 𝑱𝒂𝒔𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒕 𝑩𝒖𝒎𝒓𝒂𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒉𝒚 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒘𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝑹𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒂 𝑱𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒋𝒂?”

Ashwin believes that if Gill was selected for this role, it would have been better if some other experienced player would have taken this position and Gill would have been prepared for this role by making him the vice-captain. This also considers that Gill has not yet established himself as much as he has done in the ODI setup.

He further said,

“𝑰𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒂 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒔 𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏, 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝑰 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒔𝒂𝒚 𝒘𝒉𝒚 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒂𝒏 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒗𝒊𝒄𝒆-𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒘𝒐 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒉𝒊𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒋𝒐𝒃 𝒐𝒏 𝒂 𝒇𝒖𝒍𝒍-𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒔, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝑰 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒔𝒂𝒚 𝒘𝒉𝒚 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒂𝒍𝒍 3-4 𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒂 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂𝒔𝒌 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎 𝒊𝒏 𝒅𝒆𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒍 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒎.
