Paris Saint-Germain’s long-awaited milestone in Europe turned into another chapter of frustration under the lights of Lisbon. Despite controlling the ball, creating waves of attacks, and dominating large spells of play, the French champions walked away empty-handed after a dramatic 2-1 loss to Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League.
This was PSG’s 300th match in European competition, making them the first French club to reach the landmark. Luis Enrique’s side entered the clash at Estádio José Alvalade confident of a smooth victory against the Portuguese hosts.
PSG Late Drama Seals Sporting’s Famous Win
PSG dictated the first half with nearly 78 percent possession and 15 attempts on goal, four of which tested the goalkeeper. Yet, their failure to convert chances proved costly.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 74th minute when Luis Suárez fired Sporting into the lead. PSG responded quickly as substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia struck a stunning equalizer five minutes later, giving hope of salvaging a point.
“We pushed until the very end, but football can be cruel in moments like these,” one PSG player reflected after the final whistle.
Just when a draw seemed inevitable, Suárez struck again in stoppage time, capitalizing on a defensive lapse and a misjudgment from goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier to seal a famous win for Sporting.
Despite the defeat, PSG remain fifth in the standings with 13 points from seven matches, while Sporting leapfrog to sixth place on the same number of points, boosting their qualification hopes.
