The cricketing community was struck by tragedy on Friday, August 1, as 22-year-old Bengal cricketer Priyajit Ghosh passed away after collapsing during a gym session. The young cricketer, who hailed from Bolpur in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, reportedly suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and could not be revived, leaving his family, teammates, and friends in profound grief.
Priyajit had been training rigorously in the off-season, working on his fitness in preparation for the upcoming domestic season. He was at a gym in the Mission Compound area of Bolpur when he began to feel unwell during a workout. Despite being rushed to a nearby medical center, doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Priyajit Ghosh a Promising Career Cut Tragically Short
Known for his dedication and passion for cricket, Priyajit had always dreamed of representing Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and, eventually, India. He made a mark early in his career, finishing as the highest run-scorer in the 2018–19 CAB inter-district U-16 tournament—a feat that earned him recognition from the Cricket Association of Bengal.
“Cricket wasn’t just a game to him—it was everything. He lived and breathed it,” said a close friend of the family.
Fitness had always been a priority for the young batter. His regular gym sessions were part of his disciplined lifestyle as he worked toward securing a spot in Bengal’s senior team. Tragically, that dream was never fulfilled.
Community in Mourning
The news of Priyajit Ghosh untimely demise has sent shockwaves through Bengal’s cricket circles. His family, particularly his parents, is devastated by the loss.
“He had so much ahead of him. This is a huge loss not only for his family but for Bengal cricket as well,” shared a CAB official.
Priyajit Ghosh’s death serves as a stark reminder of life’s fragility. His legacy, however, will live on in the memories of those who knew him and in the hearts of Bengal cricket fans who admired his drive and potential.
