Prithvi Shaw’s 200-Run Knock Makes Strong Case for India Return

Prithvi Shaw

Indian batter Prithvi Shaw has made a thumping statement for a national comeback after hammering a sensational double century for Maharashtra in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2025–26 season. Playing against Chandigarh at the Sector 16 Stadium, Shaw reached the 200-run milestone in just 141 balls, registering the third-fastest double century in Ranji Trophy history. His blistering knock, featuring 28 fours and 3 sixes, once again reminded fans of his explosive talent at the top of the order.

Prithvi Shaw’s bold new chapter with Maharashtra

After a rocky phase with the Mumbai Cricket Association, Shaw switched to Maharashtra ahead of this season. The move followed a difficult 2024–25 campaign that saw criticism over his fitness and form. Following his No Objection Certificate (NOC) earlier this year, the 25-year-old joined Maharashtra and began the season on a mixed note — dismissed for a duck in his debut match against Kerala, before making a resilient 75 in the second innings. His latest performance, however, has not only made history but also reignited discussions about his return to international cricket.

“Prithvi’s innings was pure dominance. It’s the kind of knock that forces selectors to take notice,” said a source close to the Maharashtra camp.

One of the fastest double tons in Ranji history

In Maharashtra’s second innings, Prithvi Shaw smashed a stunning 222 off 156 balls, helping his team declare at 359/3. He reached his century in just 72 balls, the joint-sixth fastest in Ranji Trophy history, before racing to his double hundred at a strike rate exceeding 140. Only Tanmay Agarwal (119 balls) and Ravi Shastri (123 balls) have scored faster double centuries in the competition’s history.

“I just wanted to express myself and play freely,” Shaw reportedly said after the match. “I’ve worked hard on my game and fitness, and it feels good to contribute like this.”

Having burst onto the international scene with a century on Test debut in 2018, Prithvi Shaw’s career has since been marred by inconsistency and off-field controversies. However, this innings has once again placed him firmly in the spotlight — as a strong contender for a Team India recall.
