Hutton, Abbas Lead Nottinghamshire Close to Championship Glory

Nottinghamshire win: Hutton, Abbas push team to title brink

Nottinghamshire are within reach of their first County Championship title since 2010 after bowling out Warwickshire for 258 on the opening day at Trent Bridge. With Brett Hutton (4 for 46) and Mohammad Abbas (3 for 33) leading the charge, Nottinghamshire claimed maximum bowling points to edge closer to sealing the crown.

Title Within Nottinghamshire’s Grasp

Following their win over Surrey last week, Nottinghamshire needed 10 points to clinch the title. With Surrey also failing to secure batting bonus points in their clash against Hampshire, the equation is now simple.

“𝑰𝒇 𝑵𝒐𝒕𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒉𝒂𝒎𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒓𝒆 𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒗𝒆 300 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏 110 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒊𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒃𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓𝒔 — 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒊𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉,” 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔.

Dan Mousley stood out for Warwickshire, grinding out 74 to rescue his side from 127 for 5. He added 117 runs for the sixth wicket with Ed Barnard, who scored 48. Despite their fight, Warwickshire couldn’t prevent Nottinghamshire’s bowlers from dominating.

Bowling Depth Makes the Difference

Nottinghamshire’s bowling depth was on display, with Abbas slotting in seamlessly after Josh Tongue was rested. The bowlers struck regularly, dismissing Warwickshire’s key batters including Rob Yates, Sam Hain, and Will Young.

“𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒃𝒐𝒘𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒅𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒔 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒔,” 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅 𝒂 𝒍𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒇𝒂𝒏, 𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒔 𝑯𝒖𝒕𝒕𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑨𝒃𝒃𝒂𝒔 𝒘𝒓𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒅 𝒖𝒑 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒍.

By stumps, Nottinghamshire were left needing fewer than 300 runs to be crowned champions — a goal well within their sights.
