After 16 failed attempts, Eddie Howe finally earned his first Premier League victory over Pep Guardiola as Newcastle beat Manchester City 2-1 at St James’ Park. The win came after Howe admitted he had “lists of things that didn’t work” against City but still found a fresh tactical tweak when his team needed it most.
“You just try and learn and tweak something the next time,” Howe said after the match.
Following a poor defeat to Brentford before the break, Howe used the international window to re-energize his squad. Key adjustments included restoring Bruno Guimaraes to a central role, starting full-backs Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento together, and recalling Fabian Schar. Despite the changes, Howe refused to overhaul his system, staying loyal to his trusted 4-3-3.
Barnes Inspires as Newcastle Outfight City
Newcastle’s goal struggles had been a major issue, but Harvey Barnes stepped up when it mattered. After missing big chances in the first half, Barnes scored the opener and later delivered the winner just minutes after City equalised.
Newcastle defended with intensity, winning more tackles, aerial duels, and blocks than City. Despite Guardiola’s side dominating possession, Newcastle restricted them to only four shots on target and made 36 clearances.
Former defender Jonathan Woodgate praised them: “Out of possession they were top-drawer.”
With this result, Newcastle extended their strong home form, though their away form remains a problem Howe says they “must fix” to push up the table.
