Former RCB Coach Joins Pakistan Cricket Team in Key Role

Former New Zealand cricketer Mike Hesson has been appointed as the limited overs coach of the Pakistan cricket team. The Pakistan Cricket Board has announced the name of Mike Hesson. Mike Hesson will take over his post after the final of the Pakistan Super League on May 26 this month.

The PCB had requested applications for a new coach following this year’s dismal performance in the ICC Champions Trophy. A total of 9 people, including Mike Hesson, had submitted their candidature for the post of limited overs coach.

50-year-old Hesson is currently with the defending Pakistan Super League (PSL) champions Islamabad United. He will join the team the day after PSL 2025 ends (May 26).

Hesson replaced Aaqib Javed, who was Pakistan’s interim head coach for five months. He took over after Gary Kirsten’s sudden resignation after two years in the role. Kirsten had a two-year contract but he parted ways with the Pakistan team within six months.

Javed has been appointed as the Director of High Performance. The PCB has not officially disclosed the duration of Hesson’s contract but according to ESPNcricinfo’s report, he has been signed for a two-year deal. Mike Hesson’s first challenge as Pakistan coach will be in the T20 International series against Bangladesh. However, the schedule of this series is likely to change.

PCB chief gave a big statement

Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said on the appointment of Mike Hesson, ‘I am happy to announce the appointment of former New Zealand cricketer and renowned coach Mike Hesson as the Pakistan men’s team’s white-ball head coach.

In addition to his extensive international expertise, Mike has a track record of building successful teams. We anticipate that his knowledge and guidance will help to shape Pakistan’s white-ball cricket future. Welcome to the team, Mike.’
