Liverpool, who lifted the Premier League title in Arne Slott’s debut season and dominated the Champions League for years, are struggling this time around. With only one win in their previous five Premier League fixtures, their form had dipped significantly. After suffering a heavy defeat to PSV in their last outing, the Reds finally found relief by edging past Inter Milan. Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid also secured victories on the same night.
Liverpool Breaks the Deadlock Late
The match at San Siro was tightly contested, with both Liverpool and Inter Milan playing cautious football from the opening whistle. Liverpool managed six shots on target out of 12 attempts, while Inter produced two on target from the same number of attempts. The first half lacked intensity as frequent fouls disrupted the rhythm.
Liverpool nearly took the lead when Ibrahima Konaté’s effort appeared to cross the line, but replays showed the ball had deflected off Hugo Ekitike’s hand before it went in.
The tempo improved after the break, yet neither side found a breakthrough until the final moments.
“We stayed patient and trusted our chance would come,” was the sentiment from Liverpool’s camp after the match.
In the 86th minute, Florian Wirtz was pulled down inside the box, awarding Liverpool a crucial penalty. Dominik Szoboszlai converted with confidence, sealing a 1–0 win. Inter, who had briefly topped the table earlier in the season, slipped to fifth with 12 points from six games, while Liverpool climbed to eighth with the same tally.
Bayern Rally After Own Goal Shock
At the Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich initially struggled to break down Sporting Lisbon, ending the first half goalless. Their frustration deepened when Joshua Kimmich accidentally put the ball into his own net in the 54th minute — notably, without Lisbon managing a single shot on target.
But the setback sparked Bayern into action. Within just 12 minutes, the Bavarians struck three times. Serge Gnabry equalized in the 65th minute, Lennart Karl added another in the 69th, and Jonathan Tah extended the lead in the 77th minute.
“We needed a spark, and that own goal woke us up,” a Bayern insider remarked after the match.
The Bundesliga giants dominated possession with 55 percent and fired 23 shots, nine of them on target. Sporting, by contrast, failed to produce a shot on target across four attempts. Bayern now sit second in the table with 15 points from six matches, trailing Arsenal only on matches played.
Atletico Fight Back to Beat PSV
Atletico Madrid’s campaign has been unpredictable, and their match against PSV Eindhoven followed the same pattern. After conceding early, Diego Simeone’s team responded emphatically with three goals.
Julián Álvarez, who has been in remarkable form, equalized in the 37th minute. David Hanko and Alexander Sørloth then pushed Atletico ahead 3–1. Although Ricardo Pepi scored for PSV in the 85th minute to raise hopes of a comeback, it proved too late.
Atletico’s 3–2 win places them seventh with 12 points from six matches — level with PSG, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Liverpool, though PSG and Real have played one game fewer.
