Kirby Short Appointed Head of Female Cricket at Cricket Victoria

WBBL Champion Captain Takes on Leadership Role in Victoria

Former Brisbane Heat captain and two-time WBBL title winner Kirby Short has been named as the head of female cricket at Cricket Victoria, marking a major leadership move ahead of the upcoming domestic season. Short succeeds Sharelle McMahon, who stepped down from the position last year to return to netball in a high-performance role.

Short, 38, brings a wealth of experience to the role. She captained the Heat to consecutive WBBL championships in 2018-19 and 2019-20, and also led Queensland Fire in the WNCL. Known as a spinning allrounder, she featured in 67 WBBL matches before retiring from professional cricket in 2020.

From Queensland Icon to Victorian Leader

Despite her strong Queensland roots, Short expressed her enthusiasm for joining Victoria, citing personal ties to the state.

“𝑴𝒚 𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒇𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓, 𝑴𝒊𝒄𝒌 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒚, 𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒘 𝒖𝒑 𝒊𝒏 𝑭𝒊𝒕𝒛𝒓𝒐𝒚 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒅 𝑽𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏,” 𝒔𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅. “𝑺𝒐 𝒊𝒕 𝒔𝒆𝒆𝒎𝒔 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒇𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑰 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒈𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒃𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒅𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒘𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏’𝒔 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆.”

Since retirement, Short has stayed active in the cricketing world as a Queensland Cricket board director and as a broadcaster with Fox Sports and Channel Seven.

CV High Performance Team Welcomes Short

Cricket Victoria’s general manager of high performance, Graham Manou, expressed confidence in Short’s appointment, pointing to her extensive experience in elite cricket and strong leadership qualities.

“𝑾𝒆’𝒓𝒆 𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝑲𝒊𝒓𝒃𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝑪𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝑽𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒂 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒂 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒓𝒐𝒍𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒎,” 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒖 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅. “𝑲𝒊𝒓𝒃𝒚’𝒔 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 𝒒𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔, 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒃𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒆𝒙𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕, 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒃𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒂𝒔 𝒘𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒊𝒏𝒗𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏’𝒔 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆.”
