Cricket might be India’s biggest sporting passion, but its limited global reach has long been questioned. However, with the rise of T20 cricket and expansion of international tournaments, more nations are now stepping into the spotlight. The upcoming Asia Cup 2025 is a perfect example, featuring eight teams including Oman, UAE, and Hong Kong, alongside giants India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
Jatinder’s Journey To Leadership
Oman will be led by Jatinder Singh, the Ludhiana-born cricketer who moved to the Gulf nation in 2003. At 36, Jatinder has become one of Oman’s most dependable batters, amassing over 3,000 runs across 64 T20Is and 61 ODIs. Drawn in Group A with India, Pakistan, and UAE, Oman faces a tough road ahead, but Jatinder is embracing the challenge.
“𝑩𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒏 𝑮𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒑 𝑨 𝒊𝒔 𝒂 𝒎𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒆 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒂𝒍𝒔𝒐 𝒂 𝒃𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈. 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒂 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑷𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒚, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒘 𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒓,” 𝑱𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝑯𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏 𝑻𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒔.
He is especially eager to meet Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill, and Pakistan’s Saim Ayub, saying the experience will inspire his teammates.
Dream Of Playing Against India
For Jatinder, leading Oman against India feels surreal. He admitted he never thought such a moment would come in his career.
“𝑰𝒕’𝒔 𝒂 𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒆, 𝒉𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒍𝒚. 𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒓, 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒆𝒍𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒊𝒈𝒈𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍. 𝑰 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝑰’𝒅 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒅𝒂𝒚 𝒃𝒆 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑶𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒂 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑷𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏,” 𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅.
Oman will open their Asia Cup campaign on September 12 against Pakistan, followed by a high-profile clash against India on September 19 in Abu Dhabi.
Oman’s Fresh And Fearless Approach
The Oman squad is relatively inexperienced, but Jatinder sees this as a strength. The youngsters are fearless and eager to prove themselves without the burden of reputation.
“Sometimes when you’re new, you don’t carry the pressure of expectations – you just go out there and express yourself. That hunger can surprise a lot of people,” Jatinder explained.
Growth Of Cricket In Oman
Cricket’s rise in Oman is backed by strong support from the Indian-origin community and investments in infrastructure. The nation co-hosted the T20 World Cup in 2021, which significantly boosted its cricketing profile.
“𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑶𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆. 𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝑰 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒆𝒅, 𝒇𝒂𝒄𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒅, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆’𝒔 𝒂 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒓 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆, 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒐𝒂𝒓𝒅, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒇𝒂𝒏 𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈. 𝑯𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑻20 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅 𝑪𝒖𝒑 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒑𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒕,” 𝑱𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒅𝒅𝒆𝒅.
With enthusiasm and hunger driving this young Oman squad, Jatinder hopes to showcase their brand of fearless cricket on the big stage.
